Most beauty reviews tell you what one person thinks. BeautyProCon looks at what hundreds of customers are saying — then finds the patterns behind the praise, complaints and everything in between.
WE DON’T JUST READ REVIEWS. WE LOOK FOR PATTERNS.
A five-star rating can tell you whether people liked a product. It doesn’t tell you why they liked it, what keeps coming up in negative reviews, or why the same product works beautifully for some people and not for others.
That’s where BeautyProCon comes in. We collect customer reviews from major beauty retailers, clean and organize the data, identify recurring experiences, and turn those patterns into practical insights you can actually use.
HOW WE ANALYZE BEAUTY REVIEWS
01 — COLLECT
We collect customer reviews from major beauty retailers and other relevant review platforms. Whenever possible, we use multiple sources to capture a broader range of customer experiences.
02 — CLEAN
Before analysis begins, we check the dataset for duplicate reviews, incorrect product variants, missing information and other issues that could distort the results.
03 — CODE
We categorize what reviewers actually mention — from hydration and glow to texture, irritation, breakouts and packaging. Skin type, age and other personal details are only recorded when reviewers explicitly provide them.
04 — COMPARE
We look for recurring patterns across ratings, retailers and — when enough data is available — different skin types and user groups. We also examine where reviewers disagree, not just where they agree.
05 — REPORT
We turn those patterns into clear pros, cons, charts and practical takeaways. Our goal isn’t to tell you whether a product is simply “good” or “bad,” but to show you what customers consistently experience — and where the trade-offs are.
WHERE OUR REVIEWS COME FROM
BeautyProCon analyzes customer reviews from established beauty retailers and shopping platforms, with a focus on sources such as Amazon, Ulta Beauty and Sephora when available. We may also use other relevant review platforms when they provide useful product or skin-type context.
The exact sources vary by product. We disclose which platforms were included in each analysis so you can see where the data came from.
WHAT DOES “REVIEWS ANALYZED” MEAN?
When we say we analyzed 200 customer reviews, we mean 200 reviews that were included in the actual BeautyProCon dataset — not the total number of reviews displayed on a retailer’s product page.
We distinguish between a platform’s total review count and the number of reviews included in our analysis. Duplicate or otherwise ineligible reviews may be excluded before the final sample is calculated.
HOW WE CHOOSE REVIEWS
We don’t cherry-pick only glowing reviews or dramatic complaints. Our goal is to build a sample that reflects the broader range of customer experiences as fairly as possible.
WE LOOK ACROSS RATINGS
Where possible, we sample reviews across star ratings in a way that broadly reflects the rating distribution on each platform. This helps reduce the risk of making a product look unusually positive or negative simply because of which reviews were selected.
WE REMOVE DUPLICATES
Duplicate reviews can make one customer experience appear more common than it really is. We check for duplicate review text and exclude duplicates from the final analysis when identified.
WE IDENTIFY INCENTIVIZED REVIEWS
When a platform identifies a review as incentivized, gifted or submitted by a product tester, we record that information separately where possible. These reviews are not automatically treated as more or less trustworthy, but the distinction helps us interpret the data more transparently.
WE DON’T GUESS WHAT REVIEWERS DON’T TELL US
We only record details such as skin type, age or personal skin concerns when reviewers explicitly provide them. If the information isn’t there, we mark it as unknown rather than making assumptions.
HOW TO READ OUR DATA
Beauty reviews are subjective. Our numbers don’t predict exactly how a product will work for you — they show how often particular experiences appeared within the reviews we analyzed.
PERCENTAGES
Unless otherwise stated, percentages refer to the reviews included in that specific analysis. For example, if 30 out of 200 analyzed reviews mention stickiness, we may report that 15% of the analyzed reviews mentioned a sticky texture.
PROS & CONS
Our pros and cons are based on recurring review patterns, not isolated comments. A single enthusiastic review or complaint isn’t enough to become a BeautyProCon finding.
BEST FOR
“Best for” reflects patterns found among reviewers who explicitly shared relevant information, such as their skin type or concerns. It is not a guarantee that the product will work for everyone in that group.
WHO SHOULD THINK TWICE
This section highlights recurring trade-offs or complaints that may matter more to certain users. It doesn’t mean those users must avoid the product — only that there may be something worth considering.
OUR VERDICT
Our verdict weighs the strongest recurring positives against the most meaningful drawbacks in the analyzed reviews. We aim to explain the trade-off rather than reduce every product to a simple “buy” or “skip.”
OUR EDITORIAL PRINCIPLES
BRAND CLAIMS ARE NOT CUSTOMER EVIDENCE
We clearly distinguish between what a brand says a product is designed to do and what customers actually report experiencing. Brand claims may provide context, but they don’t determine our conclusions.
PATTERNS MATTER MORE THAN OUTLIERS
Every product has unusually positive and negative reviews. We focus on recurring patterns and meaningful differences rather than using extreme individual experiences to create a more dramatic story.
AFFILIATE LINKS DON’T CHANGE OUR FINDINGS
BeautyProCon may earn a commission from qualifying purchases made through affiliate links. Affiliate relationships do not determine which review patterns, complaints or drawbacks we report.
OUR GOAL IS CLARITY, NOT HYPE
Beauty products are personal. Instead of telling everyone to buy or avoid the same product, we aim to give you enough evidence to decide whether its strengths and trade-offs make sense for you.
